Return Window Reminder: Find Your Return-By Date

The last day to return something is the purchase date plus the store’s return window. In the US, that window usually comes from the store’s own policy rather than a general legal right, so it changes from store to store and sometimes from product to product. Work it out on the day you buy, while the receipt is still in the bag.

1. Find when the window starts

For a purchase in a store, the window starts on the date printed on the receipt. For an online order, check the policy: some stores count from the order date, others from the delivery date. If the policy is not clear, use the earlier date to be safe.

2. Find the return window

The receipt often prints the policy at the bottom. If not, the store’s website has it, usually under “Returns” or “Returns and exchanges”. Check for rules that make the window shorter or the refund smaller:

  • Shorter windows for some categories, such as electronics or seasonal items.
  • Longer holiday return periods, which usually end on a fixed date in January.
  • Restocking fees, or store credit instead of a refund after a certain number of days.
  • Conditions: unopened, with tags, in the original packaging.

3. Work out the return-by date

Add the window to the start date. Headphones bought on September 30 with a 14-day window must be returned by October 14. For a window in months, count calendar months: 30 days and one month are not the same.

4. Keep what a refund needs

  • The receipt or order confirmationShows the date, the store, and the price you paid.
  • The card you paid withRefunds usually go back to the original payment method.
  • Packaging and tagsMany stores refuse returns without them.
  • The order numberFor online orders, the return is usually started from it.

5. Track the date with AI, then confirm it

A receipt photo is enough to start. DueCalm reads what is printed and asks for what is not:

  1. Photograph the receipt.Flatten it and include the purchase date and the item.
  2. AI reads the purchase date and the price. Each value shows the words it was read from.
  3. You choose the return window.A store’s policy is rarely on the receipt, so DueCalm asks you for it and calculates the return-by date.
  4. DueCalm reminds you before the window closes.By default, 7 days and 2 days before. The same scan can also track the warranty end date.

The photo you scan is discarded after processing, so keep the original receipt; details are on the privacy page.

Common questions

Is there a legal right to return items in the US?

Generally not for ordinary store purchases. Returns depend on the store’s policy, which is why the window differs so much between stores. Some states require stores to post their policy, and some sales have special rules.

Does the return window start on the order date or the delivery date?

It depends on the store. Check its return policy; if it does not say, count from the order date to be safe.

Can I return an item without a receipt?

Some stores allow it for store credit or with the card you paid with, but many do not. Keep the receipt until the return window has closed.

When should a return reminder fire?

About a week before the last day, and again two days before. That leaves time to pack the item, print a label, or get to the store.
